"Takuseikai Art-gyotaku” was established by Master Masatsu Matsunaga who spent more than 50 years on the direct fish print method (years of attempts and errors sometimes) using water-based acrylic paint to print all the details on the fish (stripes, spots, etc.) drawing nothing else but the eyes after removing the paper.Don’t draw nothing else.
From the fisherman’s “Record gyotaku” (to record the size), to the “Color-gyotaku” (to color the fish), it evolved into “Art-gyotaku” a work of art focusing on composition and perspective.
The oldest existing Gyotaku is the direct fish print of “Shaku-Buna” Tenpo 10 (1839). Gyotaku began as a culture born in Japan, and now there are many enthusiasts around the world.
On one side we are delighted that “Gyotaku” is recognized as “Gyotaku” in English.
On the other hand, we are worried to find many surprising works when we browse the activities of people from around the world on the Internet.
Recently, various works have been produced, such as "Digital Gyotaku" which has processed images, gyotaku colored with paints, parts of the fish cut to take print separately.
As all the technics inherited from a traditional art,the technic of gyotaku must be transmitted correctly.
"Takuseikai Art-gyotaku” highlights the importance to master the technique to be able to create and work in a clean way.Indeed if you don't take the print within 30 to 40 minutes, the paint on the fish will dry and give a bad print
We see gyotaku artists who correct with a brush the imperfections of the print such as lack of prints, lack ofcolors. We do not agree with this way of doing.
We want you to understand that the blur and lack of color express the particularity of the Gyotaku, and that the same work cannot be made in two pieces, it is exactly like a “once-in-a-lifetime” chance. By using various techniques
such as retouching, the specificity of “Taku” will fade, and it will be mistaken for a “Gyotaku-style” painting.
In April 2018, a French Gyotaku-artist participated in the Takuseikai class. He was impressed when he first experienced the direct fish print method.
Later, in May 2019, a seminar and exhibition by Master Masatsu Matsunaga was held in Quiberon, France at his invitation. Gyotaku-artists from many countries such as France, the UK, the USA, Switzerland participated. They couldn’t hide their surprise in front of the outstanding technique of Master Masatsu Matsunaga.
We Takuseikai, would like to continue the activities that appeal to the Japanese culture, the Art-gyotaku, not only in Japan but also around the world.
